The charismatic Richard Béliveau is coming to Verdun this Thursday, June 14 as part of the Third Annual Health, Diabetes and Arterial Hypertension Fair.
Expect the author of the best-selling “Foods That Fight Cancer,” “Cooking with Foods That Fight Cancer” and “Eating Well, Living Well: An Everyday Guide for Optimum Health” to be frank about food and health.
“Forget about all the diets and the stupidity written about sugar, fat and protein,” said Béliveau to one journalist last year. “If you gain weight it’s because you’re eating too many calories compared to what you’re burning.”
“People who have the best health and lowest rates of cancer are people who have an outstanding quality of food,” he said to another. “North America focuses on adding flavour with salt, sugar and fat, and the rest of the world is flavouring with onions, herbs and spices.”
Béliveau’s opinions are based on expertise. He’s a full professor of biochemistry at the University of Quebec at Montreal, where he holds the Chair in Cancer Prevention and Treatment. He also serves as professor of surgery and physiology in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Montreal and associate researcher at the Cancer Prevention Centre in the Department of Oncology at McGill University. He is also a member of the Experimental Cancer Therapy Group at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal and of the Quebec Coalition priorité cancer.
Entrance to the talk, which takes place at 5 p.m., is reserved for 200 people, but admission to it and the rest of the health fair is free, thanks to sponsorship from Jean-Coutu.
Béliveau is only one of the speakers at the event, which takes place in Studio B, next to the Circus School at 5190 blvd. LaSalle.
At 2 p.m. Dr. Johanne Desforges will talk about overcoming the challenge of diabetes. Between the two, other speakers will talk about eating for health and pleasure and participating in physical activities while dealing with chronic illness. All the presentations will take place in French.
Twenty different organizations will have kiosks from noon until 8 p.m.
