Verdun’s shoreline now litter free!

Verdun residents are busy this weekend.

Today, a permaculture farmer based in Verdun will be hosting the first open house ever at his farm in Cazaville.

Yesterday, some 300 people spent Saturday morning picking up litter along Verdun’s waterfront and along a walking path on Saturday morning. A little later in the morning, a smaller group took a walking tour of the south end of Nun’s Island in honour of former urban activist Jane Jacob’s birthday, which was May 7. Others took a moss gardening workshop.

Permaculture Farm Open House Road Trip

Today, Sunday May 5, Stefan Sobkowiak, who lives in Verdun, is hosting the first ever open house at Miracle Farms, his permaculture farm in Cazaville (2034 chemin Rivière La Guerre) about an hour and a half drive away.

The McGill professor has been working with neighbours, students and others for years to create a permaculture Forest Garden where he grows apples, plums, pears, raspberries, chives, rhubarb and many other products. Normally, this is a place that only members and students get to appreciate.

The open house and free seed give-away takes place on Sunday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Guided tours will be available in French at 10 a.m. and in English at 2 p.m.

Verdun Waterfront Clean-up

The 22nd annual cleanup campaign, organized by the citizen-led embellishment committee, takes place on Saturday.

For the first time ever, mainland residents are meeting in the gymnasium of the Monsignor Richard high school, at 3000, boul. Gaétan Laberge at 8:30 a.m., because the greenhouse is being renovated until the end of June. Others are meeting at a walking path nearby.

As usual, Nun’s Island residents will meet at 9:30 at the Centre communautaire Elgar (260, rue Elgar).

The first 500 people will get a free t-shirt and everyone will get lunch after a morning’s hard work.

Nun’s Island Jane Walk

From 10 a.m. until 11 a.m., Nina Blussé Gould, from the Nuns’ Island Heritage Committee will be leading a Jane’s Walk at the south tip of Nun’s Island on behalf of the Montreal Urban Ecology Centre.

“The walk features four stops where we’ll talk about the high density development that’s been happening in the area since the year 2000,” said Gould.

The walk begins at 100, Gaspé on Nuns’ Island and finishes at the Condos Le Vistal project, 150 chemin de la Pointe sud.
