The funds are included in the $1,875,000 that councillors assigned to La Corporation des célébrations 2015 during their June 2 meeting. Tthe total budget for the event is expected to reach 6.2 million, with 4.2 million coming from the City of Laval.
La Corporation des célébrations 2015 was officially established on February 7. It is headed by Laval Mayor Marc Demers, who is president. Its board of directors include councillors Sandra Desmeules, Virginie Dufour and Raynald Adams.
La Corporation des célébrations 2015 in Laval has an extremely clear mandate,” wrote Demers, in the official launch catalogue. “We want to create a memorable, uniting event that everyone in Laval can participate in. Our anniversary will inspire our collective memory.”
The corporation will set up signature and “Laval life” events for the anniversary, but a million dollars will go towards citizen-led events. Anyone who wants to create their own events must send in a proposal by noon on August 15.
Citizen-led event proposals due by noon August 15
To be considered, the public portion of a project must occur during the 2015 year, although preparations for the event can begin in 2014. Citizens or organization members who set up such events have to make sure that they are supported by their communities and they can’t include any commercial component. Event organizers can ask for up to $30,000 from the fund and projects with additional funders will have priority.
Projects will be evaluated and selected by September 29 in time for the public launch of the anniversary calendar in November.
