MorenoMasonry expert Francisco Moreno has been volunteering to improve his community for years. Now, he wants to make his vocation a full-time job, by becoming mayor to take care of people.

“We don’t want to win an election just to sit back and do nothing afterwards,” said Moreno. “There’s a lack of listening to what citizens want. We plan to listen.”

Webcasting, term limits on elected officials, and more public consultations will help with governance transparency, he says.

He and his team joined Mélanie Joly’s team because she promised to let them focus on LaSalle instead of forcing them to think about how their needs might match those in Montreal.

“They all want us to follow party lines, but that’s what Madame Barbe has done for years and it doesn’t allow her to take care of our needs. Look at Bois des Caryiers—why is it easier for developers to replace all the windows than actually get electricity and heating functioning? Look at the situation on Rue Chatelle. Those new condos are not saleable.”

In addition to public transparency in governance, Moreno’s team plans to use borough workers rather than private companies to create local jobs.

“We think that you should give more control back to the blue collars who work for the city,” he said. “They have the expertise to do all sorts of things that private companies do now. That saves 3% off the bat, and the blue collars can’t inflate contracts.”

He and his team also want to create projects for social housing and attract more companies to industrial areas instead of relying on the borough as a bedroom community for other places in Montreal.
