On Tuesday, July 3, the Borough of LaSalle will hold a consultation about the industrial land adjacent to the former Kraft factory.

“This draft bylaw contains specific provisions that make it subject to approval by referendum,” says the legal notice that appeared on the Borough’s website last week.

According to the legal notice, the vision includes the approval of charitable work in a building at Boivin and 90th. This is the location of the former Kraft factory, which operated in LaSalle between 1958 until June 10, 2004, when 235 people lost their jobs. Today, there are several companies in former buildings linked to the enterprise, including Stor-All Mini Entrepot, at 9275 Boivin and Ross Ellis, a Transcontinental subsidiary in 999 90th Avenue.

The proposed bylaw affects a much larger area than the former Kraft building covered, however, including everything between the Hydro corridor and Newman or Airlie from Labatt Avenue to Upton. Delmar Chemicals, Brasserie Labatt, D G Centre Du Camion Inc. (Chevron), Nashville Printing and Repro, Ocean Trader, Peerless, Ren-Wil, Sparta Pewter and Transport Demark are all located in this sector. Together, the active companies employ at least 2000 people.

A recent survey of the neighbourhood shows significant unused space. Signs advertising for a total of 80,000 square feet of space available, while others show entire buildings for rent.
