Great Cycle Challenge Began Friday

Last Friday was the beginning of the Great Cycle Challenge in Canada. For the next month, thousands of us will be riding our bikes more than we usually do to raise money for cancer research.

This is the sixth summer that I’m taking part in the memory of my mom, who died of cancer in 2010. This year, I’ve upped my fundraising goal to $2,500 and maintained my cycling goal at 1000km, which was a super big challenge last year and will be equally tough this year.

Marilyn Violet Himphen Forrest Arial demonstrated a philosophy of friendship, loyalty and care. Born in Weston Ontario on April 22 1943 during World War II, to a soldier serving in Italy and his bride. Spent her first two years in a multi-generational household with her mom and grandparents before her mom married the man who became dad. Married the love of her life at 19 years old, raised three children, played a mean game of bridge and inspired her friends during book club meetings. Died fifteen years ago–on June 19, 2010–after a valiant battle with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Love you forever mom.

We are now on day 6. So far, I’ve been out every day, which has already been tough. Yesterday, I began cycling at 8:45 p.m. and this morning began at 6:30.

So far, I’ve ridden 196.7 km, which is only just on schedule to reach my cycling goal. I definitely do not want to have to ride more than 120km in one rainy miserable day like I had to last year to make it!

On the financial side, I haven’t even made my donation yet, although I’m just about to do so. Luckily, my sister kicked things off right away. Thanks Lors!

If you want to donate to the cause too, my page is at https://greatcyclechallenge.ca/Riders/TraceyArial.

Here’s a post I made last year on day 1:

Here’s a link to the podcast episode I mention above and two other related stories.
