A senior citizen climbed Mount Kilimanjaro with two others in support of mental illness between July 30 and August 3. Catherine Gillbert hopes that her climb will garner attention and new funds for a Saint-Lambert-based non-profit that needs to replace what it used to get from a major donor that now focuses solely on the island of Montreal.

Our Harbour helps English-speaking people with mental illness secure and remain in independent housing on the south shore of Montreal. Their outreach efforts include everything from setting up group apartments to recruiting volunteers to visit residents regularly. These support workers are trained to recognize potential crises and get help before re-hospitalization becomes necessary. Gillbert co-founded and now serves as chair of the organization’s board of directors.

Gillbert’s climb ends on Sunday, August 5th, so she can get home in time for her 71st birthday in September.
