{"id":1763,"date":"2013-05-23T10:53:02","date_gmt":"2013-05-23T14:53:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/traceyarial.com\/blog\/?p=1763"},"modified":"2013-05-23T14:32:01","modified_gmt":"2013-05-23T18:32:01","slug":"may-referendum-possibilities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/traceyarial.com\/blog\/en\/may-referendum-possibilities\/","title":{"rendered":"May Consultations Subject to Citizen Referendum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Three boroughs\u2014LaSalle, Plateau Mont Royal and Ville Marie\u2014are holding consultations this month to propose changes to land use policies or zoning that could require citizen approval through referendums. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Ville Marie consultation took place last night so citizens have the next week to ask for a register; a register in Plateau Mont Royal has to be signed by tomorrow; and consultation meetings take place on the Plateau and in LaSalle on May 29 and 30th respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Residents who want to set up a referendum to approve any of these projects must follow a complicated process. They have five business days to get 12 people who live in each of the zones directly adjacent to the proposed project to sign a request for a register. Then they have to get 15% of the people who live nearby to sign the register. Boroughs usually voluntarily withdraw their proposals if that happens because it usually indicates widespread dismay about proposed projects, but councillors could hold referendums if they believe most people in the borough agree with their proposals. Such referendums rarely occur.<\/p>\n<h2>LaSalle<\/h2>\n<p>The LaSalle borough has two projects it plans to authorize:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Modify and add a zone to the region between the Mission Madre Dei Cristiani and St. Lawrence Academy and Newman Boulevard so that residential homes can be built on former commercial and industrial land;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Increase the density of all the zones between 90th and the Pierre-R\u00e9my school and between the Cavelier-de LaSalle school and Bayne.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each of these projects will be presented at a meeting on Thursday, May 30 at 7 p.m. at Borough Hall, 55 Dupras Avenue.<\/p>\n<h2>Plateau Mont Royal<\/h2>\n<p>Plateau Mont Royal borough residents also have until Friday, May 24 at 4:30 to submit requests for a register about the school, daycare and library project at 6201 Park Avenue.<\/p>\n<p>The borough also plans to increase the density of the zone between Laurier East, Henri-Julien, de Gasp\u00e9 and Maguire. A public consultation about the issue will occur on Wednesday, May 29 at 6 p.m. at the borough office, 201 avenue Laurier East, 5th floor.<\/p>\n<h2>Ville Marie<\/h2>\n<p>The Ville Marie borough has five projects it plans to authorize:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">the demolition of the buildings at 1190, 1238 and 1250 Jeane Mance and the construction of an office building on five lots (1340640, 1340653, 1340656, 1340657 and 1341342) between de Bleury, Sainte-Catherine and Jeanne-Mance;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">the construction of a commercial residential mixed use building at the junction of Concorde and Burke;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">a long-term health care centre on the second floor of the Pavillon Fullum at 1431 rue Fullum;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">the expansion of a building at 2010 Papineau Avenue; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">the addition of a neon sign to the building at 705, rue Sainte-Catherine Ouest.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each of these projects will be presented at a meeting on Wednesday, May 22 at 6 p.m. at 800, blvd. de Maissoneuve East.<\/p>\n<p>Note: This article appeared in the City edition of the Suburban on May 15, 2013.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Three boroughs\u2014LaSalle, Plateau Mont Royal and Ville Marie\u2014are holding consultations this month to propose changes to land use policies or zoning that could require citizen approval through referendums.
