Register for referendum to occur Wednesday, November 19<\/h2>\n

Citizens near the projected Centrale Conversion have asked for a register for a referendum. To get one, 140 residents who live near the proposed project will have to sign between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. this Wednesday, November 19.<\/p>\n

To obtain a referendum, a specific number of residents living in the neighbouring areas have to go to City Hall and sign a sheet asking the referendum to take place.<\/p>\n

October 14: Eight new housing units planned<\/h2>\n

Owners want to convert an empty building at 8869-8885 rue Centrale (lot 1234286), between 67 and 68th<\/sup>, into an eight-residence apartment complex.<\/p>\n

Almost a dozen neighbours attended the public consultation about the project last Monday night (September 29), which was headed by Serge Duclos.<\/p>\n

Many expressed concern because the new project will attract too many cars to an area in which people already have a lot of trouble parking. The new project will included a fully-paved lot, but it\u2019s very small and only has enough room for twelve cars maximum.* Residents worry that one of those\u00a0spaces will be reserved for garbage and recycling bins.<\/p>\n

They also said that the current owners, who live in DDO, don\u2019t take care of the property. They worry about noise and that garbage will pile up during construction.<\/p>\n

No one spoke in favour of the project, although the local planning advisory committee (Comit\u00e9 consultatif d’urbanisme<\/em>\u00a0or CCU) has approved it.<\/p>\n

Anyone with concerns will be able to ask for a referendum on the issue because specifications break seven*\u00a0different sections within LaSalle\u2019s current zoning bylaw. \u00a0The sections which no longer apply are: 3.5, which determines building usage; 5.3 which specifies parking restrictions; 6.1.1 which describes necessary margins to the edge of the property, curbs, etc.; 6.1.5.3.1.1, which says that the space in rear dedicated to parking must be no more that 35%; 7.12, which specifies reasons for exceptions to the bylaws; 7.55, which limits the number of units to 7; and 7.75, which includes specific\u00a0heritage restrictions for the area.<\/p>\n

Twelve signatures will be required for one or several of the nine\u00a0zones affected by the proposed project.<\/p>\n

Borough officials did not specify the dates in which signatures must be submitted to the borough at the consultation. That date has since been set, however, and borough officials say it will be October 24. (This\u00a0date will be published next Thursday, October 16th<\/sup> in the LaSalle Messenger and on-line on the borough’s website.)<\/p>\n

Residents who attended the consultation did not receive a written description of the conversion either, something that\u2019s quite unusual. The borough did however, inform 897\u00a0families living in the zones affected by the project\u00a0about the consultation\u00a0by placing a\u00a0bilingual letter<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0photos in their mailboxes.<\/p>\n

Anyone else in the borough who wants to consult plans should refer to resolution CA14 20 0497 at LaSalle Borough Hall, 55 avenue Dupras.<\/p>\n
