Champoux was the only councillor who chose to resign from the Union Montreal party publicly at the last Verdun council meeting on Tuesday, December 4. Ann Guy and André Savard informed citizens about their resignation from the party at the same meeting, which was the last official act of former Mayor Claude Trudel.

Paul Beaupré remains the only Union Montreal councillor left in Verdun. He spent some time talking about his decision to remain with the party in response to a question from Claude Talbot. Citizens interested in hearing the resignations and Beaupré’s decision to stay can view the web-diffusion of the meeting from the borough website.

Contracts given out at the same meeting include: $376,888 to Nicomat Construction Inc. to repair the glass at Verdun’s greenhouses; $301,229 to the SPCA for animal care in the borough and $43,849.48 to ABC Recreation to equip the Esplanade de la Pointe-Nord children’s playground.

For the first time in several years, a vote had to be taken on an amendment to another motion at the meeting.

Alain Tassé voted against a motion to approve the contract to allow the Forum économique de Verdun to rent the building at 4400 blvd. Mayor Trudel explained that the contract would be automatically renewed for two years regardless of how councillors voted.

André Savard’s amendment to change the tax relative to services was also rejected, at a vote of 4 to 2, with Tassé siding with Savard.

The evening finished with Alain Tassé and Ginette Marotte thanking and congratulating Claude Trudel on 40 years of public service in Montreal and 11 years of service in Verdun, and Trudel’s thoughts on the difficulties of public service in Montreal.

Note: This article appeared on p8 of the City edition of the Suburban on Wednesday, December 19.

Verdun councillors chose Ginette Marotte as the mayor of the borough at an election held on Tuesday, December 11.
